Have you ever felt that you're not yourself? That feeling of not being as good as people think you are? Or feeling that you're just lucky and not deserve the success you have today? You're not alone. It's something almost everyone goes through. It is known as Imposter Syndrome. To be exact, it refers to the internal feeling of not believing competent enough. One feels anxious most of the time, feeling like a con man whose secrets might be spill at any moment.
'But sometimes it feels like I am motivating myself.' No, you're not. It is a convenient answer given by those who are experiencing imposter syndrome. These answers are not meant for others to believe but, more importantly, for us. It is to justify our behavior which makes it worse.
There is nothing positive about this syndrome contrary to some views. It is shattering our self-confidence and makes it harder to believe in ourselves or the hard work we do. You might credit your success to luck. It gets alarming for people who strive for perfection as they develop this insatiable desire. Most of the time, people don't even want to address the problem at hand. If it gets severe, it can cause depression, anxiety, and some other psychologically degrading conditions.
We have to start the healing journey. So ask yourself some difficult questions. It might get hard or, you might not like the answer, or you may not even have one! It is okay. You can start small by having small, achievable goals, try to understand others who are going through the same thing, and, most importantly, share your feelings. It becomes easier to cope and bounce back.
