Internet provided throughout the entire globe!
Our use of internet has expanded exponentially in the past few years,
Due to the increase of content that available, weather its for our entertainment or our learning and also because of the quarantine period brought by the covid-19 outbreak, our usage of the world wide web has now increased so much that the amount of internet available to us is not always enough, weather it's due to speed or data-limitations.
About 10% of the world’s population lives in areas with limited access to network coverage and about 47% of the world;s population doesn’t have internet access
Is there a possible solution to this? YES
SpaceX is working on a global-scale project by the name of starlink, the project uses multiple small satellites that work together to relay the internet to the consumers.
As of current scenario, there are exactly 1320 Starlink satellites in space that are orbiting the earth and relaying the internet to beta-testers in the USA.The current latest launch of these satellites was on April 7,2021.SpaceX aims to put about 40,000 satellites in a low earth orbit around the earth by 2022
Why low earth orbit?
Low earth orbit is closer to the surface of the earth, satellites in low earth orbit travel around 7.8km per second, meaning that each satellite will take just 90 minutes to circle the earth!
The low earth orbit also enables the satellites to relay the signals much faster as the signals will now have to travel less distances.
Starlink is specifically suited for rural and remote areas, where connection is either completely unavailable or unstable because the starlink device just needs a clear view of the sky to connect to the system.
Fun Fact: To sustain the beauty of the night sky, The teams working for Starlink have worked to lower the brightness of the satellites so they can be less visible from the surface, among the stars.
The project may provide extremely beneficial to a lot of people, SpaceX is not only offering a more flexible coverage but also a much reliable, much stable and also a much faster internet connection. Infact if SpaceX stands up to its promise of offering speeds upto 10gbps,this technology can easily overcome the current standard technology, fibre optic.
