How to choose a career?

Confused about how to choose a career that excites you? Don’t worry you’re not alone.

Some people take their entire lifetime finding their true passion and career option. the reality is that with time our passions, interest and options vary and this “human nature” is perhaps what gives us the fuel to move forward in life. Well the truth is no one can tell you what that “perfect fit” of career option for you might be. BUT, don’t worry we got your back.

Here are three questions to ask yourself that will help you find the answers you’re looking for-

Who are you right now?

Before making judgments about what you want to be, it is important to know and assess yourself right now. What are your likes & dislikes, what are your interests, what are the things that make you curious and hungry for more. This will primarily give you an idea about your preference for a few activities relative to others.

Are you good at what you like?

It is very important to have a realistic approach in choosing your career. While you may have a variety of things that you like to do, it is important to engage in activities that you’re really good at as well. So, for assessing your aptitude and your underlying potential for those activities it is important for you that you assess these abilities. A variety of career aptitude psychometric testing is available online, even though they might not always recognize your interests but your aptitude for certain activity can be easily assessed objectively through psychological measure that have throughout time increasingly proven their accuracy.

What are your short term and long term goals?

Choosing a career that is solely based on your “passions” is sometimes not realistic. It is important for us to recognize the factors our short and long term goals play. It is often that our aspirations clash with our passions. Financial stability and long term goals, lifestyle, geographical preference, existing capital etc. are all factors that need to be acknowledged before you take a decision about what to do.

This realistic approach will help you maneuver through challenges that you might face and help you choose a career that not only corresponds to your interests and aptitude but also with your goals and aspirations.

The truth is all these factors are ever changing and perhaps what you think your “passion” is today, might change tomorrow to something else. So in the words of the Roman Emperor, Marcus Arelius we hope you “ Go with the flow”.
